Der Spiegel Suspends Two Senior Editors for Not Catching Fake News | Armstrong Economics

The major influential German news weekly, Der Spiegel, has suspended two of its senior editors following the scandal involving a reporter Claas Relotius admitted faking stories for years. Relotius, who is 33, resigned after admitting that he had made up stories and invented protagonists in more than a dozen articles in the magazine’s print and online editions. Relotius was also named journalist of the year by CNN back in 2014. This has provided another whole dimension to the Fake News issue. Here, instead of institutional bias such as CNN, Fox, New York Times, and the Washington Post, we have an individual just creating news. He managed to get away with it for so long because the readers wanted to believe what he wrote.

This was only after he was outed by the alternative media.

This misrepresentation of people in the Midwest is not uncommon. I lived in California for three years back in the 80s. The college kids I worked with, thought we went to rodeos for entertainment. They did not know the difference between Iowa and Ohio. Once you talked past the California state line they were ignorant about Geography. They were still good kids and fun to work with. Most of the ribbing was good natured.

When I lived on the East Coast it wasn’t much better. I chose the Midwest after living on both coasts and have never regretted my decision. I still enjoy a vacation on either coast, but after that, it is time to come home.

Sometimes the coasties forget where the bulk of the food on their tables comes from. Except the great sea food, of course.

2014 CNN Journalist of the Year Admits He Just Made Up Stories | Armstrong Economics

On December 20th, 2018, Claas Relotius was forced to resign after admitting that he routinely just made up stories and invented protagonists in at least 14 out of 60 articles that appeared in Spiegel. He had written for the magazine for seven years and won numerous awards for his investigative journalism, including CNN Journalist of the Year in 2014. This is just another example of the epidemic we have in Fake News of so many subjects – not just about Trump. The greatest danger is that the majority of the people actually believe what they want to believe. The fact that news outlets think they have the right to twist the news and report only what they want to, or in this case, just make up what they want to be news, threatens our very foundation of society. All now seems lost and there is no way to put everything back together again.
