Social Security was meant to be a retirement income for Americans who paid into it. It was and is mandatory for working people to pay into. Not long after that, it became a catch all disability benefit for anyone claiming disability.
We are now in a situation where there are more taking money out of Social Security than we have paying into it. Some politicians are wanting to change entitlement funding. We have the same problem with the federal budget to the tune of 22 trillion dollars of debt.
Years back, the passed a tax on Social Security income, which seems like a tax on a tax to me. Then the government fell behind inflation in figuring yearly raises. It is to the point where you can not retire comfortably on a Social Security benefit.
My idea of change would be to seperate those who have paid into it from those who have not, by setting up a seperate program for those who have not paid in. This would bring fairness to those who have given their hard earned wages to the government in hopes of a basic retirement income. Roll back the taxes on the tax.
In the end, the federal government is too big and bloated. If you drive around the DC metropolitan area, it is saturated with federal buildings, installations, lobbyists, special intrest groups, and others who live off of our tax dollars. I might add, they are living quite well judging from the cars they drive and the houses they own.
Before politicians ask one American to pay one more dollar in taxes, they should be forced to balance the budget and start paying down the debt. “It is easy to be generous with other people’s money.”
