If this guy really was a spy and you got whacked in the process of playing his trade, what’s the big fuss. All spies know that if they get caught the endgame is never pretty.. my suspicions are that this guy could’ve been a spy, it is an old trick by governments to have spies pose as journalist. I have no inside knowledge as to whether he was a spy or not.
