The First World War often conjures images of brutal trench warfare, artillery barrages and miles upon miles of barbwire decorated with blood of the fallen, engulfed amongst the poppy laden Flanders fields in France. Undeniably these poignant images, full to the brim with sentimentality, will endure to serve as a stark reminder of the tragic moment the world went to war. Yet behind this prescribed emotive concoction of elegiac thought, it is all too easy to forget that behind the veils of conspicuousness, lay a number of intriguing factoids, which if you will permit me, I would like to indulge upon.
